Server

(Redirected from Servers)

An AfterX server is a stable computer which is connected to the Internet via a dedicated high-speed line. Typically, the computer runs an *unix flavour of operation systems (OS) as opposed to the likes of Windows. It also runs the Unreal IRCd software which enables the computer to function as an IRC server. Configuaration scripts are shared to all AfterX admins and co-admins from one central location to keep consistency high and minimise errors. There are some allowance for customisations, particularly the MOTD.

A typical AfterX server will have at least a 10Mbit line on a dedicated computer (server, or often known as "box"), with FreeBSD or various Linux flavours. They are of modest specifications - usually with around 256Mb RAM or higher with a 1GHz CPU (eg, Celeron) or better. For those running more than one service, such as website hosting, they are generally of higher specifications.

The Admin and Co-Admin are responsible for, amongst other things, the server's upkeep or they risk loosing their link with AfterX if they don't want to be replaced by another Admin or Co-Admin. For more information, see Administrator Responsibilities

Each AfterX server can contain up to six staff in total - that's a maximum of 1 Admin, 1 Co-Admin, 4 Global or Local Opers. Exceptions may be granted by a vote of Net-Com. Each staff member cannot be a Global Oper or fully fledged Admin/Co-Admin until he/she passes the Oper Test provided by T-Com. More information are in Administrator Responsibilities and Opers.
