Maintaining the configuration file
From Afterxwiki
Maintaining the ircd.conf file is a duty for the server Admin and Co-Admin. Both are expected to understand how to edit a ircd.conf file (amongst other server-related tasks).
AfterX standarisation of the ircd.conf file is achieved by using an AfterX ircd.conf sample template, available from the Network Chair. This sample file can then be customised where necessary - especially where passwords are concerned.
Passwords should be encrypted and must be resistant to dictionary cracking by use of alphanumeric characters and variation in capitalisation. As part of the security policy, passwords should be renewed on a regular basis and dissimilar from any other passwords utilised by that person. In other words, the password used to log into the server and email accounts or identifying to NickServ should not be similar to the passwords for IRC.
Oper hostmasks should be as specific as possible as a numeric IP address and include username. When a hostmask expires (for example, the Oper changed ISPs), it should be removed completely from the file immediately. Take advantage of semi-static IP addresses on cable and DSL connections by using a full match on the address.
Once the configuaration file is saved, then a rehash is needed. This can be done on the server using .unreal rehash in the appropriate place or via IRC using the /rehash command.
