New users

Welcome to the world of IRC, and in particular, the AfterX IRC network! Go straight to Connecting to IRC for information how to get started if you are completely new to IRC. If you are having problems connecting, see Problems. Unlike many of the smaller IRC networks, AfterX has a long and varied history which can be traced back to the Icenet days in 1996 and has retained some users and staff in the last ten years, a strength of our stability and maturity.

The main official channel of the network is #AfterX, and you can find some lively chats underway on just about any topic. Be warned that some of the chat can be of "adult" content - much of IRC is like this also. If you have any problems, you can try #AfterX-help where some of our staff will try and help you. If there is no response (we're only human), you can post a question on http://forums.afterx.net

You can request a vhost in the Vhost Channel #vhost

A large number of people on IRC stay connected to it, even if they are out of the house or sleeping - so if you come in at a quiet time, try again in a few hours and bear in mind of the timezones effect.

The network provides a number of services to help you chat. For example, we use NickServ to "reserve" our nicknames so that someone else can't use it, and similarly for ChanServ with channels/rooms. MemoServ allows you to send a short message to another registered nickname if he/she is not on IRC at the time. For more details about each services, see the links below.

Each server uses UnrealIRCd to provide the IRC connectivity and server-side services.

You can see our Charter - the AfterX Charter which we all abide by and also the rules which can also be typed by using the /rules command. The rules are practical user-based information based on some of the charter.

NickServ, ChanServ, MemoServ, HostServ and StatServ

IRC Operators

IRC Operators, known as IRCops and Opers are people who volunteer to help to keep the network stable, to provide help and advice to users and to prevent and minimise any attacks as well as weed out any sculperous users who are on the network for illegal reasons or contravenes the AfterX Charter. The majority of them are found in the main network channel - #AfterX and also in #AfterX-Help Opers come in two flavours - local and global and usually relate to the extent of their ability to do things (locals can only do things local to his or her server, whereas globals can effect something beyond his or her server to the entire network). On AfterX, global Opers must be fully trained and passed the AfterX IRCop Test by Training-Com or T-Com.

Opers' tools:

OperServ OperServ is used to assist AfterX's staff to give them some powers to deal with problems, and to give IRCops varying levels of access to ChanServ and NickServ such as dropping an offensive channel.

Defender A security service that checks client connections to the AfterX network against known problems such as viruses, bots, or open proxies as well as clearing out problem channels on a long term basis. See also security.

BotCleaner BotCleaner used to do a similar role to Defender, written up by a member of the AfterX team and was run as an mIRC script by other IRCops and automatically step in if the acting IRCop looses connection. As Defender does all of what BotCleaner did and more, it is mostly redundant at the moment.

Server Administrators

Admins and Co-Admins are just like Opers, except they have the added responsibility of maintaining their server, keeping the software up to date and ensuring the configurations are up to AfterX's standards to promote reliability and responsiveness. Co-Admins and Admins are members of the Network Committee (Net-Com). Either the Admin or the Co-Admin of a server has voting rights.

The Network Chair is an elected network admin, and is in overall charge of Net-Com and may override any votes that he/she believes is against the spirit of AfterX and to the detriment of our users and staff.
