Cloning
From Afterxwiki
Cloning is when someone has more than one connection to our network. The most common form of cloning is when a user lost connection and reconnected, but a ghost remains on our network. Usually, the user kills the ghost using NickServ. If you get lots of disconnects in a short time, producing more than one ghost, you are at risk of being automatically removed from the network if you have three ghosts and your live current connection. Only three connections per IP address is allowed.
However, we do not really consider this as cloning. Cloning are deliberate multiple connections to the network under the same IP. Often these are for illegimate reasons, such as to maximise the impact of flooding. To reduce this effect, each AfterX server has a limit on how many connections is allowed from the same IP, and this is set at three. The fourth and newest connection will be killed off. If the client has auto-reconnect, it will be continually killed and then the server will throttle (delay) the connection.
However, there are legimate use of cloning, and we do allow this. Occasionally, we can put in exceptions if the IP address is static or near enough static, and that we are satisfied that the exception will not be abused. If you want this, speak to an IRCop - to find one, see the Reporting Problems page.
